My Class5th Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade

Becoming more independent and responsible is an important goal for 5th graders.
This is a transitional year since it is the first time that students change classrooms for a portion of the day.  Students spend 85 minutes of their academic day with their non homeroom teacher.  Mrs. Blanco teaches reading and language arts to both classes, while Mr. Smith teaches science and social studies to both classes.  This prepares them for 6th grade when they switch classes for half of the day.

Fifth graders participate in a choral/instrumental performance, have opportunities to be part of the Morton Elementary Choir, and become role models to first grade students through the “Book Buddies” program.

Science:
The concept of the science fair is introduced in 5th grade.  Students are able to work with a partner this year in preparation for the more intense, individual 6th grade science fair.  In addition, fifth graders also study the following topics:

  • Cells and Kingdoms
  • Ecosystems and Biomes
  • Earthquakes and Volcanoes
  • Earth's Resources
  • Weather
  • Kinds of Matter
  • Forces and Simple Machines

Social Studies:

Throughout the year, fifth graders study the history and geography of the United States.  Some specific topics include:

  • Geography Skills using maps and globes  (all-year)
  • Native Americans
  • European Explorers
  • Colonization
  • Revolutionary War
  • American Government
  • Civil War

Math:

By now, students should know their basic math facts well.  This will allow them to focus more easily on the following math skills:

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of large numbers
  • Understanding place value in whole numbers and decimals
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Utilizing algebra skills as a way of solving problems
  • Geometry skills
  • Measurement (customary and metric)

Language Arts:

A genuine love of reading is hoped to be instilled by exposing students to a variety of genres of novels.  Fifth grade also focuses on the following language arts topics:

  • Parts of Speech
  • Paragraph Writing (Expository, Persuasive, Narrative)
  • High-frequency spelling words in addition to novel-based lists
  • Daily activities to improve proofreading
  • Improving students' vocabulary and comprehension skills

The teachers hope that 5th grade is both an educational yet enjoyable year for their students. It is fantastic to work with students at this age because they have curiosity and an excitement for learning that makes every day special.

About the Teacher
Mrs. Blanco was born and raised in a suburb of Chicago and moved to Peoria in her eighth grade year.  She graduated from Richwoods High School then Illinois State in 1982 and has been teaching ever since. She and her husband Mike live in Peoria.  Mrs. Blanco has three children, Emily, David and Suzi. Her passions of family, travel, quilting, and reading keep her busy while she is not at Lincoln.

Mission for the Class
My goal as a fifth grade teacher is to provide activities for the students to become critical thinkers and to explore their identities.  As students realize that Knowledge is Power, my hope is that they will become questioners that seek answers.  Curiosity and the love of learning is a special quality to possess.
