My Class5th Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade

Becoming more independent and responsible are  important goals for 5th graders. We teach the students that they are able to do many things on their own and guide them in taking ownership in their learning.

5th grade is the  first time students change classrooms for their day.  Mrs. Blanco teaches Reading and Language Arts to, Mr. Smith teaches the mathematics and the spelling component of language arts, and Mrs. McKee teaches Science and Social Studies along with the non-fiction writing components of language arts. Additionally students have time with their homeroom classes where the classes will work on activities related to study sills, passion projects and manners.

Fifth graders also participate in a choral/instrumental performance, have opportunities to be part of the Morton Elementary Choir, and become role models to first grade students through the “Book Buddies” program.

The teachers hope that 5th grade is both an educational yet enjoyable year for their students. It is fantastic to work with students at this age because they are curious and have an excitement for learning that makes every day special

Language Arts:

A genuine love of reading is hoped to be instilled by exposing students to a variety of genres of novels.  Fifth grade also focuses on the following language arts topics:

·       Parts of Speech

·       Paragraph Writing (Expository, Persuasive, Narrative)

·       High-frequency spelling words in addition to novel-based lists

·       Daily activities to improve written expression

·       Improving students' vocabulary and comprehension skills.

By now, students should know their basic math facts well.  This will allow them to focus more easily on the following math skills:

·       Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of large numbers

·       Understanding place value in whole numbers and operations of decimals

·       Fractions and their operations

·       Utilizing algebra skills as a way of solving problems

·       Geometry skills

·       Measurement (customary and metric)

Fifth graders study the following topics:

·       The Scientific Method

·       Engineering and design

·       Structures and properties of Matter

·       Space Systems: Stars and the Solar System

·       Earth’s Systems: geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere

·       Life Science: Ecosystems

Social Studies:

Throughout the year, fifth graders study the history and geography of the United States.  Some specific topics include:

·       Geography Skills using maps and globes  (all-year)

·       Native Americans

·       European Explorers

·       Colonization

·       Revolutionary War

·       American Government

·       Civil War

About the Teacher
Mrs. Blanco was born and raised in a suburb of Chicago and moved to Peoria in her eighth grade year.  She graduated from Richwoods High School then Illinois State in 1982 and has been teaching ever since. She and her husband Mike live in Peoria.  Mrs. Blanco has three children, Emily, David and Suzi. Her passions of family, travel, quilting, and reading keep her busy while she is not at Lincoln.

Mission for the Class
My goal as a fifth grade teacher is to provide activities for the students to become critical thinkers and to explore their identities.  As students realize that Knowledge is Power, my hope is that they will become questioners that seek answers.  Curiosity and the love of learning is a special quality to possess.

Mrs. McKee’s mission for her class is to establish relationships with her students so they are able to take risks in their learning.  Her goal is to help students understand that everyone is special and that when they work hard at something, they can learn to do anything that they set out to do.
