My Class2nd Grade

Welcome to Second Grade at Lincoln Elementary

Second grade provides opportunities to learn new skills and information as students expand and build upon what was introduced and developed in first grade.

Reading/Language Arts:  Students will participate in whole-group and small-group guided reading activities.  A weekly test is given.  Independent reading stamina grows as reading selections are longer and the vocabulary more advanced. Answering higher level comprehension questions and reading fluency is emphasized.  The Accelerated Reader program is introduced and participation is required.  It is highly recommended that 2nd graders spend 20+ minutes daily reading outside of class.  We use the Writer's Workshop model to work with children at their level and incorporate rich literature experiences. Students will work through the Writing Process to create works of writing that represent a variety of genres and writing purposes.

Math:  Students will learn how to add and subtract two & three digit numbers and become more proficient at telling time, using a ruler, and counting money.  We will als introduce basic fractions and explain the properties of basic 2D and 3D geometric shapes. Basic addition and subtraction facts are practiced by using Rocket Math timings.

Spelling:  Through the differentiated spelling program Words Their Way, students are given spelling tests that meet their developmental needs each week. Dictation sentences and a test over 20 spelling words are given each week.

It’s going to be a great year!
